Quilotoa--Lake in a Volcano

I went to Quilotoa this week. It might be the greatest lake in the entire world.

So to hear the story: we went to church in Ambato like normal and then we ate and went to Latacunga. That is right--I was in Latacunga (Probably the same house where Brother Oler lived, close to that Catholic Cathedral). So we had to go out to the boondocks of the city. We went like 2 hours out of Latacunga to do some baptismal interviews. I went to do this baptismal interview, and I had another "Wow!, I cannot believe I am in Ecuador" moment. I was sitting in this little hut with this guy. In the hut there were rabbits and guinea pigs (they eat those here, super delicious) and also a huge spider that kills these guinea pigs. The interview went well and it was a special moment. Also we helped the guy find his pig at 7:00 because he lost it. Super fun. We were planning on hitchhiking back to their house in Latacunga but some members came in clutch and helped us out. But that is not the end of the hitchhiking.

So we stayed the night in Latacunga because our house is an hour away. We got up at 5 in the morning to go to Quilotoa. Quilotoa is a lake in a volcano. One of the things that made the trip so great is that Ecuador is so high up that we are literally in the clouds. As we went up the mountains we were able to get above the clouds and see the 3 huge volcanoes: Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, and Chimborazo.

Quilotoa is beautiful. It was really difficult going up and down the side of an old volcano but it was definitely worth it. To get back we were waiting for a bus but we decided it would be cheaper and faster to hitchhike. So me and 5 more missionaries jumped in the back seat of this guys truck to take the 90 minute trip back to Latacunga. We got really close. We had to all sit on each other just to fit back there.

So a lit P-day.

Life is going great out here. Elder Brown and I continue to work like crazy out here and our dream is to open up China together. We want them to add another year on our missions so that we can be the first missionaries in China. We will see how it goes.

Love y'all,
Elder Tucker

  1. Your post is great. You are certainly having a wonderful mission. Your Gramps and Nana actually ate guinea pig in Peru. I'll have to dig up the picture of the cook who posed in front of the pig she cooked for us. We also was in a hut where the pigs live along with the family. Such a fun experience. We love reading your posts.
